Esther Segal (1895‒1974) was born in Ukraine. After her father died, her family settled in Montreal, with Segal immigrating in 1909. She attended night school in Montreal and studied at the Jewish Teacher’s Seminary in New York. Segal married and had a daughter – Mashe – with poet A.S. Shkolnikov. She herself began publishing poetry in 1922, and continued to do so frequently in various anthologies and journals, eventually publishing a singular collection entitled Lider (1928). After the death of her husband, Segal moved with her daughter to Israel.
