Robin McGrath (1949‒ ) was born in St. John’s, Newfoundland, two days prior to Confederation ‒ making her one of the “confederation baby” generation. McGrath completed a Ph.D. in Canadian Literature from the University of Western Ontario, living in London, Ontario for fifteen years, raising three children and writing for the London Free Press. She then taught at the University of Alberta in the Department of English and wrote for the Edmonton Journal. She also became a well known Eskimologist through her work in the Canadian arctic and subarctic. It was not until she was in her 40s that she began to explore creative writing. She has authored or edited numerous works of various forms, including (but not limited to) Trouble and Desire (1996), Escaped Domestics (1998), Hoist Your Sails and Run (1999), Donovan’s Station (2002), Gone to the Ice (2002), Nursery Rhymes of Newfoundland and Labrador (2004), Covenant of Salt (2005), and Livyers World (2006). She has also written a play, entitled Mountain of Shoes (2002). Her works have been translated into multiple languages, and have received many literary awards. McGrath lives in Harbour Main, NL with her husband.
