Malca Litovitz (1952‒2005) was born on 7 November in Hamilton, Ontario. She held a B.A. from New College, University of Toronto (1974), an M.A. from McMaster University in Hamilton (1975), a Ph.D. in English (all but dissertation) from University of Toronto (1979), and a B.Ed. from University of Toronto (1980). She was a teacher of English literature and creative writing full-time for 25 years, and also maintained several part-time employment positions over the years; in addition to teaching, Litovitz was an editor, critic, performer, mentor, and award-winning poet. Litovitz was the author of To Light, to Water (1998) and At the Moonbeam Café (2003). The former won the 2000 Jewish National Book Award. After her death on 18 July 2005, Seneca College in Toronto established a prize in creative writing in her honour.
