Sharon Nelson (1948‒2016) was born in Montreal, and is the author of eight books and three chapbooks. She held a B.A. in Religion and English from Sir George Williams University (1970) and an M.A. in English from Concordia (1980). Nelson has had several plays produced, and several of her poems have been used in choreographies as musical accompaniment. Her works are widely translated and anthologized, particularly in feminist and Jewish collections. Nelson’s poems appear in both high school and university curricula in the United States and Canada, and have also been used in women’s studies courses. Nelson taught writing and creative writing at Concordia and UBC, as well as writing and editing at the University of Jyvaskyla in Finland. She also co-authored computer science texts. Nelson co-founded the League of Canadian Poets’ Feminst Caucus in 1981 and, a decade later, the Federation of English-language Writers of Quebec. She passed away at home on 12 June 2016 after a brief illness.
