A Day in the Life

Jessica Legg

November 17, 2020 (Tuesday)

8:45 - My alarm is usually set for 9:00 on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday, so I have been trained to wake up around then, even though I have no class this morning. I have about three and a half hours before my seminar at 12:30. I can use this time to catch up on the work I let slide over the weekend because I was home celebrating my mom’s birthday. Or I could go back to sleep.

11:30 - I am making breakfast. I did not go back to sleep, nor did I do homework. Instead, I read my new library book (The Return of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle) for the last two and a half hours. I was not wearing my glasses, which was a bad idea, and yet I find I regret nothing. Breakfast is the usual two eggs as an omelette (or scrambled depending on how bad I am at flipping it), and my remaining carrots.

12:30-1:20 - In the seminar, my group spent most of our time debating about how to record a podcast over Teams by Friday because we slightly procrastinated. In our defence, we had another group project due last Friday so we were focusing on that.

2:55 - I’ve done my best to do a variety of school work for the last hour and a half, but now I am eating lunch (extra KD I made for dinner last night) and realizing that I have no groceries and forgot to get some on the weekend. On the upside the rest of my day is free so I can suit up for the grocery store. Lucky me.

3:04 - I have reusable bags, a mask, my wallet and phone, and a 30-minute walk to the nearest grocery store because the university did not deign to give us a bus pass this year and I didn’t buy one because the only places I go are the grocery store and sometimes the mall. The mall is over an hour walk and I have not been since it started getting cold. I am used to walking everywhere because our public transit in my home city is not fantastic, and since the gyms are either closed or not where I want to be during an international pandemic, walking and running are the only exercise I get.

3:39 - I am at the store and the baby carrots are not great, so I get cucumbers and bell peppers instead and make a note to go to the other grocery store in my budget later. The issue is the grocery store is near the mall: i.e. an hour walk for me.

3:47 - I am reminded why grocery runs are not fun for me, as I sometimes get mild sensory overload from the combination of the mask, headphones, and people being too close. I can handle it as it also sometimes happened before COVID, but it has been more frequent since the pandemic started. Apparently music and a piece of fabric are too much for my brain.

4: 25 - I’m home, the groceries are (mostly) away and I’m back to doing school work.

8:00 - The kitchen is free, so I’m making dinner now. By dinner, I mean toast and a banana. And leftover Halloween candy. A perfectly reasonable amount of Halloween candy.

8:17 - I should get back to doing schoolwork, but my attention span is gone by this point. I'll read instead, or browse the internet.

1:05 am - I lost track of time. This is a regular occurrence. I'm going to go to bed now.
