Hannah Parson, a young woman in her early 30s, is harassed by three collection agents who force her to confront her debt and isolation as she struggles to create meaningful art in her disheveled apartment. Each collector takes a different approach: Mrs. Smith is maternal; Mr. Maggat is persistent and foolish; Mr. Virtue, forceful and lascivious. Hannahʼs lovesick landlord, Jim, also comes to call. Hannahʼs collectors are only half-real. They inhabit her dreams and live inside her head. They work together to distract and humiliate her, causing her to question the value of what she is trying to make, and ultimately prevent her from making anything at all. Throughout the play Hannah works to figure out what she owes and whom she should pay back first, while attempting to complete a final, important project. She hosts two unexpected visitors: Mrs. Smith, who has come to confront Hannah directly, and a troubling ghost from the past; her ex-boyfriend, Martin. Even when the power is cut off in her apartment, Hannah refuses to relinquish herself (or her art) to her creditors.
