Andie, a young woman, cross-dresses to audition for female roles in Shakespeare's plays (in Elizabethan times played by boy actors), and falls in love with her leading man. Rejected by her lover when he discovers she is pregnant with her rapist's child, Andie and Charley, her faithful dresser and confidante, continue a life in the theatre. They become older, wiser, and never doubt the power of love.
