"The Handless Maiden" is inspired by an old tale heard in many countries around the world. It is the story of female empowerment, of discovering one’s own strengths despite disfigurement, banishment and loss, and it is set in the wild, mythic present. After paying her father’s debt with her hands, and losing her father to the river, the maiden flees from her home to the forest. Handless, she struggles to survive when she crosses the river to an orchard, and back again, renewed.
