Alfred Freesome is a divorced, forty-year old man living in a basement apartment on St. Claire Avenue in Toronto. His life consists of shuffling between his Lazy-Boy and his job in lost baggage at Pearson International Airport, until his sister Mandy is incarcerated in the Metro Detention Centre for setting fire to a baby carriage belonging to her ex-husband. Alfred's life is turned upside-down and inside-out as he tries and fails to care for Mandy's kids, Christina 14, Joelly, 9, and Janey, 6. Enter Sophie, a feminist tour-de-force, whose plans for Alfred push him to the brink of disaster.
