Vous n’avez pas besoin de moi près de lui. Pourtant si vous lui écrivez, dites le moi pour que je l’avertisse & que votre lettre ne reste pas dans les bureaux. Je ne croyais pas, avant d’avoir éprouvé ce sentiment, que ma douleur avait porté des fruits qui puissent me paraître sains. Maintenant, en combattant cet éloignement du monde il me semble que je gaspille ces fruits si durement acquis. Il me semble que si (pas impossible !) j’arrivais à me vaincre, à reprendre plaisir à ces choses, je descendrais moralement ; j’ai l’impression de travailler douloureusement à ce qui serait une déchéance. Est-ce vrai, cher ami, ou est-ce un scrupule maladif ? La douleur m’a menée à une sorte d’ascétisme qui (contre toute apparence) avait toujours existé en moi à quelque degré. Ma chambre de jeune fille était un peu cénobitique – un peu comme votre bureau du Bd. Montparnasse, qui m’est très-ami. Peut-on dire cependant que les réunions mondaines soient en elles-mêmes mauvaises ? Rationnellement non. Et j’en éprouve une horreur & une honte, comme une religieuse qu’on y transporterait brusquement. Tout cela est-il absurde ou non ? Et si cela ne l’est pas, peut-on avoir <hi rend="underline">le devoir</hi> de travailler à sa destruction morale ? En tous cas, mes nerfs n’y tiennent plus. Sa série de quatuors est finie (la série avec chant.)
