Je serais bien incapable d’en écrire une ligne ici. Si j’écrivais, ce serait une œuvre de lumière. Jadis, quand j’ai passé deux ans au palais Farnèse, j’ai exigé plusieurs fois de relire des romans aussi. Jamais je n’ai pu. Ils me répugnaient, ici. Pendant un an ; c’est à peine si j’ai joué de la musique. Je n’ai jamais pu jouer de <persName key="Wagner, Richard, 1813-1883." ref="http://viaf.org/viaf/29732107" cert="medium">Wagner</persName>, à Rome. Nul motif raisonné. J’ai passé chez eux une soirée très amicale ; nous avons beaucoup causé ; assez intimement. J’ai été peiné de voir l’abandon où ces jeunes gens sont laissés de la part de tout le monde. Leur bibliothèque, installée dans une salle vraiment royale, a peut-être des ouvrages précieux, mais elle manque du plus essentiel.
