Le lendemain de sa fuite, au couvent d’Optina, ou il s’était réfugié – un long article sur la peine de mort. – Ce qu’il aura écrit là-dessus me touchera plus que ce qu’ont écrit ou pensé <persName key="Hugo, Víctor, 1802-1885" ref="http://viaf.org/viaf/9847974">Hugo</persName> et <persName key="Voltaire, 1694-1778" ref="http://viaf.org/viaf/36925746" cert="medium" type="real">Voltaire</persName>, pour qui je n’ai pas de sympathie. Mais si je trouve impossible que <persName key="Tolstoj, Lev Nikolaevič, 1828-1910" ref="http://viaf.org/viaf/96987389" cert="high">Tolstoy</persName> pensât autrement, c’est à cause de la logique de sa doctrine. La base de tout est la non-résistance au mal. Admettez-la (et vous ne pouvez sans un acte de foi), et tout le reste est nécessaire. Mais on ne peut, à mon sens, s’élever contre la peine de mort isolée, tout en admettant le reste, tout cet ensemble de mesures oppressives qui protège ce que nous nominons la civilisation, - les riches et l’élite. Je suis tout prêt à faire bon marché de la civilisation : elle ne vaut pas ce qu’elle coute. Mais si je crois (ou si je veux croire) en elle, alors je n’ai nulle hésitation à la défendre, fût-ce par la violence. On ne fait pas la guerre avec bonté, on n’est pas bon en vivant dans un état de guerre. </p><p/><p>J’attendrai, pour lire votre étude sur Ernest Ahlgren, qu’elle soit entièrement publiée. – J’ai reçu ces jours-ci, un assez grand nombre d’articles de revues anglaises, italiennes et suisses sur <title key="Rolland, Romain, 1866-1944." ref="http://viaf.org/viaf/71397100" cert="high" level="m">Jean-Christophe</title>. Je crains bien de devenir européen, avant d’être français. Un des articles anglais dit que je suis né à Clamecy, « ville de Franche-Comté », aux frontières de la France » ! « ce qui explique, ajoute-t-il, le caractère germanique de ma pensée. » (C’est un compliment). Je ne m’en fâche pas : car je sais que je suis pur Français ; et plus on trouve en moi des caractères qui ne semblent pas français, plus la démonstration est faite qu’on ignore en grande partie le caractère français. C’est la une des erreurs contre lesquelles je voudrais le plus réagir. La faute en est à Paris, et aussi, chère amie, aux gens de votre Midi (et de l’autre Midi) : car c’est leur conception propre de la vie et de l’art qui s’est imposé aujourd’hui, dans le monde, sous le nom exclusif d’esprit français. </p><p>Il me semble qu’Arcachon a toujours une influence apaisante pour vous – C’est un pays où j’aimerais à passer quelque temps. Mais je sais que ce ne serait pas agréable à ma mère.
