En 2 ou 3 jours j’ai déjà 300 f., somme qui sera certainement doublée ou triplée car je n’ai encore qu’une faible partie des réponses. D’après les indications de <persName ref="http://viaf.org/viaf/24850468/" key="Marchand, Esther, 1861-1947" cert="high" type="real">Mme Marchand</persName> j’ai dit que les souscriptions ne seraient touchées qu’au reçu de la musique, vers octobre. J’aurais aussi bien pu les demander de suite, mes amis les tiennent à ma disposition. Si <persName ref="http://viaf.org/viaf/32264756/" key="Dupin, Paul, 1865-1949" cert="high" type="real">Dupin</persName> était dans un besoin d’argent pressant, il est ennuyeux de penser qu’il y a une somme qui dort là et qui pourrait lui rendre un service immédiat. On ne peut demander une avance à l’éditeur, qui est pauvre comme Job . . . Je ferais bien volontiers moi-même l’avance, mais cela me gêne de le proposer à <persName ref="http://viaf.org/viaf/32264756/" key="Dupin, Paul, 1865-1949" cert="high" type="real">Dupin</persName>, je crains de gâter quelque chose dans nos relations, très amicales. Puis a-t-il actuellement grand besoin d’argent ? Vaut-il mieux lui en faire avoir de suite ou lui en garder en réserve ? Vous êtes plus au courant que moi de sa vie et de son caractère, vous pourriez me renseigner là-dessus. Puis peut-être verrez-vous un moyen de lui faire accepter cette avance sans le froisser, en ce cas je la ferais tout de suite, dans la mesure qui vous paraîtrait utile pour lui.
