ref="http://viaf.org/viaf/56642657/" cert="definite" type="real">Madame</persName></salute> </opener> <p>J’ai en effet beaucoup de sympathie pour <persName ref="https://viaf.org/viaf/32264756/#Dupin,_Paul,_1865-1949" cert="definite" type="real">Paul Dupin</persName>. C’est un homme digne du plus grand intérêt. Je ne dirai pas qu’il est « un compositeur de premier ordre ». Mais il est un vrai artiste, musicien de race, et dont la personnalité poétique est singulièrement attachante. Son éducation est incomplète ; il l’a faite seul, et la vie a été si dure pour lui que c’est à peine s’il avait pu entendre quelques concerts d’orchestre avant ces deux dernières années ; c’est moi qui lui ai fait entendre pour la première fois une symphonie de Beethoven ! (Je me hâte d’ajouter qu’il connaissait pourtant ces symphonies pour avoir lu les partitions d’orchestre au conservatoire. Il s’est instruit par la lecture). Avec tout cela, il est non seulement un mélodiste, mais un harmoniste né. Il a écrit un opéra, dont il a fait aussi le poème, et qu’il a en l’espoir de faire représenter à <placeName cert="probable" key="La Monnaie" ref="http://www.wikidata.org/entity/Q551479">la Monnaie</placeName> : on le lui avait presque reçu. Je n’aime pas beaucoup cette œuvre, et d’une façon générale, je ne crois pas Dupin ni suffisamment armé ; ni bien fait pour ces grandes machines dramatiques. Mais où il me parait <hi rend="underline">tout à fait</hi> personnel, c’est dans les <hi rend="underline">lieder</hi>, et surtout dans les petits poèmes pour piano. Il y a là une poésie mélancolique, fiévreuse et pure, dont l’accent va au cœur. J’aime particulièrement certaines pièces qu’il a écrites sur mon <hi rend="underline"><title cert="reasonably certain" key="Jean-Christophe" ref="http://www.wikidata.org/entity/Q2476841" level="m">Jean-Christophe</title></hi>. Il me semble en plein développement ; et chacune de ses œuvres nouvelles me parait manquer un progrès. </p><p>Ce qu’il faut avant tout ; c’est tâcher de lui trouver une situation moins absurdement en contradiction avec sa vraie nature, et où il puisse avoir quelques loisirs pour créer. Il est pour tout le jour à la compagnie de l’Ouest (services de l’exploration, rue de Rome) ; et il ne lui reste que la nuit pour sa musique. Il s’est usé la santé à cette vie, et il a été très malade, cet hiver. Par bonheur, ses chefs, sont, je crois, assez bons pour lui. Mais il ne dépend pas d’eux qu’il ne souffre d’une telle vie. </p><p>Je tâcherai qu’il dépose chez vous des copies de deux ou trois de ses œuvres. En tout cas, <persName cert="probable" ref="http://www.wikidata.org/entity/Q26997979" type="real">Demets</persName> me parait décidé à publier prochainement quelques pièces de lui. Vous pouvez donc vous faire une idée de son talent. Je vous remercie de bien vouloir vous intéresser à lui.
