Most of us have scars on our bodies 
from these sores, that look like 
shrapnel scars. Some will remain 
on us forever, they are so bad. On 
January 23/39 men were given new 
pants, shoes, socks, sweater and shirt 
and sent to San Sebastian 
to be 31 Canadians, 75 English exchanged for Italians.

We thought we were leaving the worst 
place there was in Fascist Spain 
but we learned different in San 
Sebastian. While marching through 
the town, the radio was ann-
ouncing that we were 100 english 
prisoners, just captured near 
Barcelona. Taken to the Provincial 
Jail, we were put in the cellar 
were half the cells were full of 
water and dung, owing to the poor 
sewer piping. Here we received 1 small 
loaf of bread a day. Also for a week 
we got a ladel of lentels twice a
