Is the government of Spain a "red" government or a "people's" government? What is the attitude towards it of Liberal Republicans? Of Anarcho-Syndicalists? Of workers and farmers? Of high intellectuals? Of the clergy? What is its program and what has it done for the people? Has it persecuted the church or religion? Who organized the revolt against it and why? What part are foreign governments playing in fomenting revolt? What is the significance of the Spanish conflict for the democracies of the world? What can Americans and Canadians do to help the forces of democracy? To answer these burning questions Dr. Harry F. Ward and A. A. MacLeod, chairmen of the American and Canadian Leagues Against War and Fascism, on their recent trip to the World Peace Congress in Brussels, arranged a special interview with representatives of the Spanish government. The conference was held in Paris with the following present: MARCELINO DOMINGO ANTONIO LARA LUIS RECOSENS SICHES JOSE SALMERON LUIS SARASOLA DOLORES IBARRURI (La Passionaria) MIGUEL GONZALEZ FIDORO HERNANDEZ ANTONIO MORENO See "Appeal" - Appendix "A" This comprehensive delegation gave three hours to answering ques- tions of Mr. MacLeod and Dr. Ward on behalf of the American and Canadian democracies. Sometimes the questions were posed to particular individuals; most often they were discussed by the entire group and then answered collectively. Yet each individual contributed his share to the collective answer. The questioners will long remember the clear, urbane mind of Mar- celino Domingo, with his understanding both of Spanish and of world politics: the comprehensive grasp of legal questions showed by Antonio Lara, the sad, firm nods with which the priest Luis Sarasola affirmed that the "church" should not be confused with "priests who shoot from belfries" and "make God to be a belligerent," and the modest clear accounts given by the three members of the workers' militia. Most of all they will remember the warm, deep tones of La Passion- aria, for whom every question was a matter of passionate conviction too firm to admit of doubt. The interviewers wish to express thanks to Anna Louise Strong. American writer and lecturer, who took the notes and compiled the material of this interview.
