In writing this statement of how Fascist Spain treats the International Prisoners within her territory, I wish to stress one point in particular, and that is, the extremely dangerous position of our German Comrades. Throughout all the thirteen months that we were together together, it was chiefly the German and Polish Comrades whom the Fascists singled out for special persecution. Nine of these Comrades have spent and very likely are still still spending their days in the vermin infested, damp, and indescribably unsanitary dungeons of San Pedro de Cardeña. This, for the last six months, on a diet of one bread the size of an Hot-Dog bun, one ladle of sour beans, and putridly rotten sardines. The loaf of bread is an issue for 24 hours. Unless these Comrades are rescued and this in the very near future, they will be beyond saving. The inhuman treatment they have been receiving these past months will, beyond the slightest doubt cause their deaths, and that - Who knows? - Even now some of them are in the small cemetery back of the Convent of San Pedro de Cardeña.
