The Republican lines originally ran North to South, to the right of and parallel to the road from Madrid to Pinto and Valdenioro. When the XV Brigade came up on February 12, the Fascists had broken through and crossed the Jarama river a little south of Vaciamadrid and also at San Martin de la Vega. The Brigade went into action on the road between San Martin and Morata, at a point north of Pingarron Hill. It thus had to meet two main forces of the three-armed Fascist thrust viz,

those aiming for Morata and Arganda respectively.
