Committee to Aid Spanish Democracy, 415 Manning Chambers, Toronto, April 18th, 1938. FIRST THINGS FIRST In an emergency bulletin, sent out a few days ago, we announced that Canada is falling behind in its pledged promises of aid to the Spanish people. While the need for orphanage accomodation has more than doubled, payments due for the upkeep of the present occupants of the two Canadian homes have not been met. During March, $500 was sent to Spain from this office. Much more should have been sent. PLEASE DO YOUR PART TOWARD IMMEDIATE TAKING UP OF THE DEFICIENCY. With every foot of ground seized by the rebels, more and more refugees pour into the diminished Loyalist areas. This means a growing shortage of food; more wounded in need of hospitalization; more destitute and parentless children to be cared for, and additional need in every direction. INTENSIFY EVERY REPORT TO SECURE FUNDS TO MEET THESE NEEDS. SEE THAT YOUR COLLECTION BOXES ARE PROMINENTLY PLACE AND INSPECTED REGULARLY. HOW “NON-INTERVENTION” WORKS A summary of recent information cabled by trustworthy correspondents of various United states newspapers, shows that, in recent weeks, 30,000 German troops, with specially trained officers, had left for Spain; that another 30,000 who attended the "demonstrations" in Austria had continued on into Italy and thence would be shipped to Spain to give further help to the rebels; that Franco now has more than 600 planes, "a majority of them modern two-engined German and Italian bombers,“ and that prominent German aviation officers are in charge of the slaughter from the air of Spanish women and babes. A FEATURE OF HITLER'S "STRATEGY" IS THE DESTRUCTION OF ALL WHEELED VEHICLES BELONGING TO LOYALISTS IN THE ZONE OF GERMAN OPERATIONS. THIS MEANS, OF COURSE, AMBULANCES AND THEIR CAR- GOES OF WOUNDED LOYALISTS. In pleasant contrast is the news from Paris, that the French Govern- ment is helping to evacuate the international sounded from the hospitals of Madrid. Ships have been chartered and equipped for the purpose, and temporary hospitalization will be provided in France. Canadian sympathisers can only regret that Spain‘s appeal to other democratic governments to assist in this work will go unheeded here. BLOOD TRANSFUSION UNIT STILL ACTIVE Allan May, former Toronto newspaper man and our representative at the Blood Transfusion Institute in Madrid, who has just returned to the latter xity from the Guadalajara front, reports the carrying out of more than 100 blood transfusions in eight days, coincidentally with the setting up of seven new Loyalist front line posts during the offensive. In addition, as many as forty blood extractions were made in a single day, donors coming from a radius of fifty miles to donate their blood in response to radio and newspaper appeals. Declaring that enormous sacrifices on behalf of world democracy are cheerfully being made in Spain, Allan urges that they be met with practical gratitude and generous giving by the people of Democratic Canada. TO ALL TRADE-UNIONS: On Sunday, April 10, a convention of Labor, cultural and fraternal organizations was held in Toronto to decide the best means of combatting the spread of Fascism in this country. IT IS THE TRADE UNIONS OF SPAIN - NOT ANARCHISTS, SYNDICALISTS, COMMUNISTS OR OTHER POLITICAL AFFILIATE5 - WHO ARE LEADING SPAIN’S WAR FOR THE SURVIVAL OF DEMOCRACY AND LIBERTY. IT WAS THE TRADE UNIONS OF SPAIN WHICH PROVIDED AN INARTICULATE PEOPLE WITH A VOICE
