8 HOSPITAL As will be seen from the recommendation of Mr. A. A. Macleod as adopted by the Executive Committee, it has been decided to recommend that our first objective should be the upkeep of a 100 bed hospital in Spain. This will require the payment of $2,500.00 per month for maintenance alone. This amount is not yet available over and above other overseas committments. In addition to this, an initial amount, as yet unestimated, to establish a hospital. Further details have been asked for from the Centrale Sanitaire overseas. It is earnestly hoped that before long the Committee will be able to launch and fully maintain this project. The Centrale Sanitaire Internationale writing regarding this proposition under date, August 28th says: “Regarding your decision to support a hundred bed hospital in Spain, we believe that the amount of $2500.00 is necessary, seeing that the food itself costs about 10.00 francs per day. But the most important of all things is to send enough medicaments, instruments, X Ray apparatuses, radiologiqual films, etc.” CHILDREN’S HOMES The Conference held on June 15th recommended as follows:- “That we heartily agree with the work of the Coordinating Committee in its recommendation from Paris in regard to Child Welfare - to provide homes for children who have been made homeless as a result of the war and to maintain homes that will be provided by the Spanish Government. We should solicit progressive groups to accept responsibility for the maintenance of the children. “That this Committee should accept the objective of the maintenance of 500 children.” Negotiations have since been proceeding regarding the establishment of these homes. Up to the moment $1300.00 has been sent forward to the Children's Commission of the International Coordination Committee on this account. Of this $575.00 was received from the Youth Committee; $300.00 from Montreal, and $200.00 from Winnipeg. Smaller sums from other places were also earmarked for this purpose. Mr. Henning Sorensen made an investigation as to Children's Homes available and reported to the Committee. Again on his way out he called at Barcelona and saw Assistencia Infantil, he reports as follows:
