Dear Bill,
There is an unpleasant problem about which I have to inform you.
Frank Hadesbeck phoned me to say that he had discussed your letter about him to the Regina Leader~Post with a lawyer and that the lawyer told him that he has grounds for a legal suit for slander.
He said he has a friend in the Knights of Columbus who will back him by as much as $5,000 and is pressing Frank to sue you.
He told me that I should make no mistake about it: he will sue you and that I should not try to talk him out of it.
I did my best to talk him out of it —- vigorously.
He states that he does not contest your right to disagree with his opinions about the war in Spain but that you questioned his military record because he was not wounded. He says that it is precisely on that question alone that he will sue.
He says that if he gets a retraction on thepart questioning his military record he will not take any legal action. However he insists that the retraction on that one question must be published in the Regina Leader-Post. He says that he will write you by registered mail early in the new year making his demands.
In the discussion-argument that took place between us I told him the following,
. That the veterans had read his article about which they were very upset and angered because it isn’t true, and if they had reacted the way he is doing then they have grounds to sue him for slander:
