8. Altogether since the Committee was established over $5000 worth of literature has been distributed. The Propaganda value of this is incalcuable. It is seed sowing, but seed sowing of such a kind that the value of the harvest cannot be accurately estimated. At present there is a stock of literature on hand which is valued at $500.00 as per attached statement. We have a set of 287 Posters, 150 Photographs taken by Hazen Sise, many of them depicting the scenes of the trek from Malaga. Together with souvenirs such as bone rings worn by the various trade union groups, political buttons and scarf pins. These posters and souvenirs have already been exhibited twice in the Massey Hall Basement; first when Bishop McConnell, Chairman of the American Committee paid a visit to Toronto, secondly when the recent Spanish Delegation visited Toronto. The Posters have also been shown in the Hall at 6 Denison Avenue, the Labor Lyceum 346 Spadina Ave, and in several churches including Carleton United Church and East York United Church. The Posters have also been shown in such cities and towns as Niagara Falls, St. Catharines, and Welland. We have 22 stands for tacking up the Photographs and Posters. At these Poster Exhibits, we also sell Spanish literature. These Posters make a powerful display. PUBLICITY For several weeks past, special press releases have been sent three or four times weekly to all daily newspapers in Canada. They have consisted of brief stories containing only a few paragraphs each, taken from cables received from Allen May and from the literature received in the office from the Spanish Government and other sources. Each is supplied with a date line — Madrid, Barcelona, Paris, London, etc. - and contains news which does not find its way into the ordinary press services. At present there is no means of finding out how these releases are treated; though we do know that they are steadily ignored by such papers as the Toronto "Telegram” and “Globe and Mail.” It might be worth while to subscribe to a press clipping service in order to keep track of items published and to discover which papers are friendly to the Loyalist cause. Helping in the same direction might be the publication, in the “Clarion”, the “New Commonwealth,” and other sympathetic papers, of some such announcement as the following: Authentic news from Spain, as distinguished from rebel propaganda, is sent to all Canadian newspapers regularly by the Committee to Aid Spanish Democracy, in Toronto. If you do not find in your local paper, news of the atrocities committed by Franco and his foreign backers and of the wonderful social reforms carried out by the Loyalists, this material is not being-used. In such case you can help the cause of Loyalist Spain and the suffering Spanish people by asking your local editor “Why?” And remember, that a paper which is consciously friendly to Franco, probably is friendly also to Fascism in all countries, including our own. In add ition to the press release referred to above, all local committees and sympathisers have been fully apprised of the Committee’s work and of the growing needs of Spain by means of a periodical bulletin.
