PUBLICITY

For several weeks past, special press releases have been sent three or four times weekly to all daily newspapers in Canada.

They have consisted of brief stories containing only a few paragraphs each, taken from cables received fronxlllen May and from.t e literature received in the office from.the Spanish Government and other sources. Each is supplied with a date line —]Madrid, Barcelona, Paris, London, etc. ~ and contains news which does not find its way into the ordinary press services. .

At present there is no means of finding out how these releases are treated; though we do know that they are steadily ignored by such papers as the Toronto "Telegram? and "Globe and Mail." ,

It might be worth while to subscribe to a press clipning service in order to keep track of items published and to discover which papers are friendly to the loyalist cause.

Helping in the same direction.nfight be the publication, in the "Clarion", the "New

Commonwealth,“ and other swmpathetic papers, of some such announcement as the following:

Quthentic news from Spain, as distinguished from.rebel propaganda, is sent to all Canadian newspapers regularly by the Committee to Aid Spanish Democracy, in Toronto.

4 If you do not find in your local paper, news of the atrocities committed by Franco ,and his foreign backers and of the wonderful social reforms carried out by the Loyalists, this material is not being-used.

In such case you can help the cause of Loyalist Spain and the suffering fipanish people by asking your local editor "Why?" »

And remember, that a paper which is consciously friendly to Franco, probably is friendly also to Fascimn in all countries, including our own.

In add ition to the press release referred to above, all local comittees and I sympathisers have been fully apprised of the Committee's work and of the growing needs of Spain by means of a periodical bulletin. ./
