THE NEW ROBINSON adapted for the use of primary schools in the Kingdom of Italy. Padua, Penada brothers. 1811. There certainly is not one single primary school teacher, and I will dare say, not a single father, who does not know the work entitled Robinson Crusoé, nor an innocent youth who has not extremely enjoyed the tale of that shipwreck, and all those other adventures that constitute the topic of that instructive and delightful novel. The Italian edition of that work was reprinted so many times, that very few other works in the same genre have occupied the work of typographers so much. Nevertheless, despite the pleasure and the useful instructiveness that Robinson Crusoé holds in itself, it is also fraught with superfluity and with details that can bore the yet attentive curiosity of some kid who is a little less than patient. The celebre Philosopher from Geneva, in his Emile, adopts it as the first educational novel, as the text to which all conversations on natural sciences can refer back to: but he adopts it deprived of the whole heap of uselessness that clutters it, and supposes, to complete his plan of philosophical education, that Robinson would be devoid of all artistic tools: so it is possible to say that Rousseau adopted a book that actually only partially existed. The renowned German writer Mr. Campé, preserving the main idea of the novel, has composed the New Robinson, avoiding all the faults of the original in his work, and making it correspond to Rousseau’s wishes, and appropriate for the education of children. This work, that was already available in translation in France, is now published in Italian, thanks to the cares of the Penada brothers, Paduan typographers, and comes to light under the auspices of the Royal General Direction of public education, which deemed it suitable to the primary education of the Italian youth. This work comprises two volumes in 12, of 267 and 296 pages, printed on good paper, and with modern characters. Price, 3 Italian liras for each volume. The work can be found in Milan from Antonio Fortunato Stella’s bookshop, in contrada S. Margherita, where another five booklets are on sale, with the title: Short Stories and Conversations for the Education of Primary School Children, at the price of 3 liras all together, a little work that the editors intend to reprint once the few existing copies of the old edition have all been sold.
