CAML’s Statement to the Royal Society of Canada, Expert Panel “The Status and Future of Canada’s Libraries and Archives” March 14, 2014 Thank you for the opportunity to participate in the Royal Society of Canada’s review of the status and future of Canada’s libraries and archives. The Canadian Association of Music Libraries, Archives and Documentation Centres (CAML) is a national membership organization whose objectives include encouraging and promoting the activities and research of libraries, archives and documentation centres concerned with music and music materials, and strengthening cooperation among institutions and individuals working in these fields. Members of the CAML Board have reviewed the framing questions document you sent to associations. In the interest of brevity we would like to focus on the devastating effects of the cuts at Library and Archives Canada (LAC): to the former Music Division, to music collections, and to public services. LAC has played a pivotal role in the discovery and preservation of Canadian heritage and culture, including music. CAML is concerned that there is no plan for continuing this legacy, which is of great value to current and future music researchers. As music librarians, archivists, and scholars, we rely on LAC to provide resources and services to help us, in turn, provide research assistance to Canadians. We hope that the Expert Panel’s Report will be able to have a meaningful impact on the challenges confronting the future of Canada’s libraries and archives. If the opportunity arises to assist further in this endeavour, the CAML Board would be glad to participate.
