inadequate and consisted mainly 
of beans + bread. The poor quality
+ the scarcity of food resulted in 
more sickness and the average 
man has lost from 5 to 15 kilos. in 
weight. Sanitary conditions were of 
the worst possible. 5 toilets + 
4 wash basins to serve the needs 
of 450 men. It is almost unbelievable 
but only too true. Baths were out 
of the question. Only during the 
summer months were we able to 
wash properly + keep reasonably clean.
We were taken to the river once 
a week + it was like heaven to 
be clean if only for a day.
The food + the living conditions
were bad but the treatment 
dealt out by the Fascists was 
incomparably worse. Clubs, sticks,
riding crops were almost constantly 
in use. For no apparent reason
