2 or 3 pieces of boiled potato and 
the water they were cooked in. We 
thought this was bad but after 2 weeks, 
they cut down to plain bread and 
water. For the rest of our time there, 
we lived on this soup 
made of nothing but bread and 
water. When finally taken 
over the border on April 5/39 we 
were so thin and weak we 
could hardly walk. We were never 
a day in Fascist Spain without 
hundreds of lice and fleas. Many 
had dysentry and all had stomach 
trouble which it will take quite 
a while to cure. We had no meat 
or sweet food in Fascist Spain. 
No baths + very little medical 
attention and we were always sick.
