First they need nurses who can speak their own language. It is more important that a wounded man should be nursedby a w‘oman=who canspeak his own language than be operated on by a surgeon who may understand nothing more than the technical problem involved. Then they need the food of their home-land pre- pared by these hands who nurse them. ‘ I _The delights of scrambled eggs on toast with a cup of English tea would be likea gift from heaven to stomachs not yet attuned to olive oil and Spanish beans. So I see the need for an International Nursing Corps of French, Germanand English nurses; principally to nurse the sick and wounded of the heroes of the ‘International Brigade. I ’ T I ‘ « What Spain Needs Now this is what is needed in Spain: 1. More physicians who ‘speak French or German, if not Spanish. 2. More brain surgeons, on account of the high -proportion of the head injuries owing to lack of proper protection of the skull by steel helmets. The Chief Surgeon of one of the fronts told me on‘Christmas Day that 70 percent of head wounds could have been prevented by the use of steel helmets———but he added bitterly-——“France and England would not let us buy steel helmets to save our lives against German and Italian bullets.” 3. More foreign nurses to be attached to hospitals treating the wounded from the International Brigade. . 4. A convalescent home and club for the German, French, English, Italian and Polishmembers ofthe International Brigade. Think of being in a country, say like these Englishmen in a German Battalion, of being wounded and in ahospital and being operatedon and nursed by those who could not speak a single word of English—.—.-of being discharged and wandering about Madrid lonely, discouraged and sad. ’ r to make happier the livesof some of the finest of young British manhood I have ever had the pleasure to meet. These young -men, some of them not yet 20 but most between 20 and 30, are fighting. for idealsas pure, as strongly felt, as animated their ,Anglo-Saxon Ancestors, in the Wars of the Crusades. And they are fighting to save this land, this pleasant land of Spain, from the grasps of the Fascist infidel-I-—'who denies by word and action belief in the virtue of mankind, his ability to govern himself, freed from political dictator- i ship and economic oppression. . 5. We need more ambulances. More splints. More AX-ray films. , y . Happy New Year a I We would also be glad to hear from those who are listening in nightly aswe are not sureof the number of our audience. Will you drop me a line»? . And now we wish you a Happy New Year. . G We are happy here too because we know that 1937 will see the International Fascists driven from this land forever. Spain will be free andsthe second great fight against the threat of the New Dark Ages of Fascism will be defeated. All men of good will should not only earnestly desire but must purposefully act towards that end.-~»SAIlUD. Now who in England will provide these. .Here is a project
