2 We soon seen what they were for. They would hit a man with them on the slightest excuse. They would chase us down in the Patio for our meals and chase us back with these damned clubs. Some of the guards carried rubber hoses five feet long especially for us. Many men were beaten so badly that there were in bed for 3 or 4 weeks. 19 men escaped but all were caught but one. These men when caught were beaten daily and kept in dark wet, cold cells. Getting out to a toilet once every 24 hours. Our clothes were falling to pieces so the red cross, gave us a very long shirt apiece. This was all the clothing some men had. No shoes pants or underwear. The lice and fleas were thicker than sand in the ocean. Eventually every one broke out in big running sores which would not heal.
