“Now that the amount of money available has been reduced to $500 a month (6,500) pesetas by internal exchange) our financial assistance does not appear very great. However, it does represent a fixed amount which will not have to be found elsewhere and if extra help is given in the form of cars, refrigerators, etc. the Canadian aid will continue to be very solid and real indeed. “We have rearranged the entire house, making it both more comfortable and more efficient. The refrigerators on the fronts have been redistributed and we are now engaged in finding a solution to the problem of food for the donors. We now have 2,092 registered. “Altogether, the Institute has made 1,839 extractions of blood to date. Transfusions made in Madrid alone since January amount to 626. The remainder were done in the front line hospitals. Twenty military hospitals in Madrid call us when transfusions are required and five civil hospitals, such as the great maternity hospital and those of the Red Cross also use the service. We have done as many as 35 transfusions in one day and can if necessary do twice as many. “I would like to express my admiration for you and all members of the Committee for their patience and for the steady, undaunted way in which you.have carried on the work at home. As it is I can only say “Salud” and “Por la Victoria final.” Mr Hazen Sise severed his connections with the Blood Transfusion Institute some weeks ago. For a short time he visited London, where his business was located and he is now on his way to Canada. Henning Sorensen has also severed his connections with the Institute. He is at present visiting his old home in Denmark, and expects to be in Canada within a few weeks. These gentlemen both retain full interest in the work the Committee is carrying on in Spain, and the information and advise they will be able to Give will be exceedingly valuable. They will be welcomed back to Canada. Mr. Allen May is still on the job with the title and position of “As- sociate Director” to Dr. Barber who is the Chief of the Blood Transfusion Work. At the present time he is in Paris where he is supervising the purchase of some medical supplies for the Blood Transfusion Institute. He will return to Spain almost immediately. We are continuing the sending of $500.00 per week as per agreement and such other equipment and help as we may find possible and advisable from time to time.
